At 4pm EST (Tuesday, Nov 15) I am doing an updated LinkedIn for Executives: Beyond the Basics, for Experts Connection.  The cost is $60.  Im amazed at all the crappy LinkedIn advice floating around rest assured, I wont go into anything  superfluous.  Ive always recognized that my audience is busy, or feels overwhelmed, and needs to know what to DO to get the most value, and then move on.   Click here to sign up. At 7pm EST (Tuesday, Nov 15) I am hosting Mark Hovind for our second tell me about the economy NO COST webinar.  The first one blew me away.  I almost-guarantee (I hardly ever guarantee anything) that you will learn a ton.  Is the economy going up?  Is it going down?  Disregard the crap you get from the media and check out Marks analysis, taken from current economic numbers and compared with the trends from the last 60ish years. Click here to register. (heres the last one I did with Mark, in July of 2009) Sign up for at least one of these! Tuesday Webinars! Pass This Along! Synchronize Your LinkedIn Profile for a Better Career - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Synchronize Your LinkedIn Profile for a Better Career - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career I spoke with a job seeker this week who is seven months into his search. After receiving his inquiry and before calling him, I did what many professionals and all recruiters do these days.  I reviewed his LinkedIn profile. What I saw was that  he had eight jobs in the last 11 years. Yikes! When we got on the phone, I told him that I had reviewed his LinkedIn profile. He shared his background, which I had already seen (and was frightened by) on  his LinkedIn profile. I asked what he wanted to do next and he told me he wanted to be in sales or business development with a technology company. After a few more minutes of conversation, I decided to hit him with a question that I hoped would get his attention and be helpful to him. (I do this frequently when I see people shooting themselves in both feet.)  I asked him Do you realize your LinkedIn profile is scary? He said he recognized that his frequent job changes were not good, so he had just updated his resume to lump some of the work together under a title like consulting or something similar. Your LinkedIn Profile and Your Resume So, my next question was  Why didnt you do the same thing on your LinkedIn profile? He said he hadnt gotten around to it yet, but planned to do it soon. Remember this is seven months into his job search! I tell you this story because I want you to avoid making the same mistake this job seeker made using a scary resume and LinkedIn profile, plus  not synchronizing them. In addition to synchronizing your documentation,  you also  need to increase your profiles  visibility to recruiters, hiring managers, and networking contacts. Check out my previous blog post for tips on doing this. By increasing your visibility, you will improve your long-term career opportunities as noted in Chapter 13 of my career book: Having recruiters calling you and offering you jobs, even if you decide not to take them, will improve your career attitude and allow you to be a resource by referring them to good people you know. Once you have become more visible, then  your profile will be seen by 20 times more people than will your resume. It then becomes far more  important than your resume and will attract job opportunities. Then, with a synchronized resume, you will be in good shape! When  you  engage in a future conversation that requires your resume be provided to a recruiter or hiring manager (or if you have it posted online and they can find it there), it is critical that your profile  be synchronized. They will check it. This doesnt mean they should be identical. I recommend  your profile use excerpts from your resume rather than  duplicate it. A final note: Many of my clients have more than one resume. If you have more than one resume, then its important that your LinkedIn profile be a coherent blend of all the resumes you are providing to others. I want you to be successful and gain the career opportunities you deserve. Synchronize now and maximize your future!

The 15 Best Leadership Lessons

The 15 Best Leadership Lessons “Make Every Day Your Masterpiece.”   This is a quote and one of the leadership lessons by John Wooden.  I found his  quotes and thoughts  were great advice to me in my career.    His teachings  resonate not only with  children playing sports but also with men and women in just about any profession. Coach  Wooden  created a pyramid that illustrated his coaching and teaching philosophy as building blocks.    Below are the 12 lessons  in leadership on the pyramid with faith and patience on each side.   At the summit of the pyramid is “Success.”   Each of the blocks represents a trait that a person must possess in order to become successful in life just like in playing a basketball game. Using this pyramid as a guide, Wooden believed that anyone could have success in their lives by following his simple leadership lessons outlined below. “Success is a peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to become the best of which you are capable.” -John Wooden Here are the 15 leadership lessons placed on his pyramid: 1. Industriousness: Success travels in the company of very hard work. There is no trick, no easy way. 2. Friendship: Strive to build a team filled with camaraderie and respect. 3. Loyalty: Be true to yourself. Be true to those you lead. 4. Cooperation: Have utmost concern for what is right rather than who is right. 5. Enthusiasm: Your energy and enjoyment, drive and dedication will stimulate and greatly inspire others. 6. Self-control: Control of your organization begins with control of yourself. Be disciplined. 7. Alertness: Constantly be aware and observing. Always seek to improve yourself and the team. 8. Initiative: Make a decision! Failure to act is often the biggest failure of all. 9. Intentness: Stay the course. When thwarted try again; harder, smarter. Persevere relentlessly. 10. Condition: Ability may get you to the top, but character keeps you there â€" mental, moral and physical. 11. Skill: What a leader learns after you’ve learned it all counts most of all. [RELATED: 8 Smart Strategies to Conquer Your Workplace] 12. Team Spirit: The star of the team is the team.   “We” supersedes “me.” 13. Pose: Be yourself. Don’t be thrown off by the events, whether good or bad. 14. Confidence: The strongest steel is a well-founded self-belief, it is earned not given. 15. Competitive Greatness: Perform at your best when your best is required. Your best is required each day. Wooden was a devoted Christian who regularly read the Bible and attended church. He believed strongly in his faith and implemented it in how he lived his life. He made it known that there were more important things in life than just basketball.   The Pyramid of Success is something we all should take a look at and see what improvements we can make  in our own lives. Which leadership lessons can you apply to your life?

Executive Job Search and Blogging Perfect Together Want to know why blogging and executive job search are a match made in heaven? I hear stories all the time from recruiters and other colleagues in the careers industry about executive job seekers who landed plum jobs as a result of blogging. Their stories have a common theme. Recruiters and hiring decision makers found their blogs, or articles they guest-blogged on someone else’s site, when they were keyword searching online for viable candidates. These hiring professionals were impressed by the writing skill and subject matter expertise of the bloggers. Some of these executive job seekers were offered opportunities in the “hidden job market”  â€" positions not posted anywhere â€"  because their blogging activity positioned them as a good fit for a company. For some of the blogging executives, a new position was created to fit them into the organization.   Their promise of value to the organization was that apparent. So, does this make you want to dive into blogging? Before you do, building a strategic plan is essential. Ive compiled below just a sampling of how-to posts from some of the best bloggers on leveraging blogging to build personal brand visibility and brand evangelism. Pay it forward at every opportunity - Jane Jackson Career

Pay it forward at every opportunity - Jane Jackson Career Always ?pay it forward.I saw an unemployed gentleman in Martin Place today as I was going to a dental appointment.   Hed pinned a sign on the front of his shirt and the same words on a sign on the back of his jacket:   Please help me survive.   Im unemployed but Im not giving upHe had in his hands some felt pens, biros and some loose greeting cards.   His sign also said, Pens $2   Thank you. He was wearing a business shirt and a rather crumpled suit.   He looked world weary.I stopped and asked him his name.   He told me his name is Peter.I didnt need a pen or a card but I wanted to give him something and handed over $5.   I noticed I happened to have a copy of my book in my bag (I had planned to give it to my dentist that day.)   I asked Peter what sort of job he was looking for and he said, Anything.   I told him that its important to be more specific so people can help him and he said, Well, any clerical work.   As my book is all about building confidence and resilience and all th e tools to secure a new job, I decided my dentist could wait and so I gave my book to Peter.   He was so happy!I hope it helps him to ?#?findajob? while hes ?#?navigatingcareercrossroads?. It put a smile on his face and a huge smile on mine!I instantly realised why I was so driven the past year and why it was so important for me to write this book.   It was so that Id be able to help those who need it but cant afford career coaching.     This book will give him the tools to rebuild his confidence and practical guidance on each step of the job search process.Pay it forward.   There is always an opportunity to help someone every day.I hope that when Peter reads this book he will follow the suggestions and advice and be more successful in marketing himself, in securing interviews and, hopefully, a new job.   All my contact details are in the book and I will wait to see if I ever hear from him again.   If not, I still have a feeling that by him having the book it will give him strength to carry on and know that people do care.An act of kindness can bring a sparkle to their eyes like diamonds in the sunshine.

Tips For Writing a Great Resume Summary

Tips For Writing a Great Resume SummaryWriting a great resume summary is an important part of the application process. It is an initial brief that is sent to a hiring company that will be using your resume as they seek to interview you for a job. It provides the name of the person who has called you and any other information that they might need to contact you. It helps employers to gather important information about you and assess whether or not you are the right person for the job.As a business owner, it is your responsibility to help make sure that your resume is well-written. If you feel that you are lacking in this area, it may be a good idea to take a few steps to increase your resume writing skills. A few tips will help you make the most of the time you spend with your resume. When writing your summary, do not ever use old material. Instead, you should be adding new information that will help your resume stand out. Avoid using a summary that is five years old at all costs, as t his will show that you have not worked hard enough to be qualified for the position.Do not make any assumptions about your qualifications based on your current salary. If you are being called for an interview because of your previous salary, make sure that you do not waste any time telling them that your salary will not allow you to be hired. Show the employer that you are prepared to work for less money. You will also need to be prepared to take a pay cut when applying for a second job.All of the basic details should be included in your summary. These include your name, address, phone number, fax number, email address, current and past employment history, education, and employment experience. The summary should not contain any personal information that would distract from your interviewer's ability to accurately assess your qualifications. This includes things like where you lived, hobbies, and any past criminal activity. This will not help you get hired, but it can put you in a ba d light with potential employers. The easiest way to make your summary easier to read is to use bullet points to separate sections. This will make the job of reading your resume a lot easier. It will also make it more effective when writing your summary. Make sure that the bullets are of equal length so that they do not become distracting. There are many other tips you can follow to make your resume more effective. While you should be as creative as possible, you should still stick to the basics. Try to create a catchy cover letter and resume example that will help get you noticed by companies that are searching for candidates. You should also make sure that your resume includes plenty of keywords so that it is search engine optimized. These tips will help you write a great resume summary. The key is to make sure that your resume is error free and clear of grammatical errors. The summary is your first impression and you should make sure that your first impression is not negative.
